HIV/AIDS Sometimes Saddens, Sometimes Surprises

Sikalela Tsabedze shuffled into a Luke Commission comprehensive care clinic a year ago in northern Swaziland. Sickness accompanied his every step.

Agreeing to a simple blood test, Sikalela registered positive for HIV. When TLC staff member Phumzile counseled Sikelela, she learned he had two wives at home.

“Please go get your wives and bring them,” urged Phumzile.

TLC staff member Phumzile (left) counseled Sikalela and his wives. Once ever-so-sick, each one is now thriving though HIV positive.

The women predictably tested positive for HIV. Blood was drawn from each adult. Sikalela’s CD4 count was 12, dangerously low, so low it’s a wonder he could walk or think rationally. Death loomed right around the corner. His wives’ CD4 counts also were life-threatening.

Sikalela’s six children are not infected with HIV virus. Here they receive new outfits from The Luke Commission.

Immediately, The Luke Commission facilitated emergency initiation of ARVs with assistance from the Swazi government and other collaborating partners. Then TLC discovered the father and two mothers had six children.
