Snakebite Center of Excellence

Biting Back Against Snakebites

Since 2017, The Eswatini Antivenom Foundation (EAF) and TLC have partnered to build a world-class snakebite treatment program for Eswatini. With expert advice from EAF and a well-trained, always-available team at TLC’s Snakebite Treatment Unit, the two entities coordinate care for hundreds of snake bite victims each year.

Remarkably, in the last year, coordination among EAF, TLC, and other referring hospitals has led to a 100% survival rate for snakebite patients.

The Venom

Home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world, including the puff adder, Mozambican spitting cobra, black mamba, and more, Eswatini sees over 500 snake bite victims each year. A bite from one of these dangerous snakes will often result in the loss of life or limb if not treated quickly and with the appropriate antivenom. Sadly, the majority of snake bite victims live in poor and rural communities, which makes timely treatment all the more challenging.

The Antivenom

Seven years ago, TLC launched its Snake Bite Treatment Unit, which now treats more snake bites than any other facility in the country and serves as the nation’s Centre of Excellence for snakebites.

Snake bite admissions at TLC have increased +140% this year over last year, with over nearly 400 cases admitted since September 1, 2023 (the start of snake bite season). In spite of rising VIP (Very Important Patient) volumes and the high cost of antivenom, we are happy to report that TLC has never once stocked out of antivenom.

A Winning Combination

More than just antivenom, TLC’s collaborative program includes:

  • Prevention campaigns to educate the public on the importance of quick medical referrals

  • Country-specific antivenom and supply chain controls

  • A strong referral network (60% of TLC’s snakebite patients are referred from other health facilities, ensuring timely, lifesaving care)

  • Robust protocols to optimize antivenom use

  • Ventilators and ICU beds available 24/7

Compassion is a limitless resource in a resource-limited world
